Tips for winterizing your home! |
- Caulk your trim & baseboards. Wet your hand with water and run it along the edges of interior window and door trim and at the top of baseboards on exterior walls. You’ll feel a draft like wind blowing through a straw, caulking that space can make a significant difference.
- Inspect your doors. According to the US Department of Energy, as much as 35 percent of the air leakage in a home can come from small openings in doors, windows, and fireplaces. Use door sweeps & rubber weather stripping for a tighter seal.
- Ready your windows. If you have older windows use clear weather stripping around the edges or use window shrink film with a hair dryer for a tight seal to keep that winter weather outside where it belongs! Hint -“We stock all your weatherproofing needs!” Remove any window AC units or if that is not practical for your living space then make sure you seal your window AC with an AC cover or a tarp and seal the edges.
- Check your heating system. It’s a great time to have your heating system serviced. Also if you have not cleaned your ducts in a while, now’s the time to have it done. If you plan on sealing your ducts, make sure you use metal foil tape, not duct tape. Duct tape becomes brittle and dry over time. If you have the extra money you may want to consider installing an energy star programmable thermostat that manages your heat when you’re not home.
- Change your smoke & carbon monoxide detector batteries! Now is the perfect time!
ABOUT INDEPENDENT WE STAND
Independent We Stand is a movement of independent business owners across the country to inform their
communities about the importance of “Buying Local” and how these efforts bolster their local economy. This movement supports all local and national causes committed to boosting local economic development projects. The Independent We Stand movement is sponsored by STIHL Inc.
WHY BUY LOCAL
• When you spend $100 at an independent business, $68 returns to the local community. Spend
that same amount at a national chain and it drops to $43.
• Small business accounts for 75% of all new jobs.
• Locally owned businesses reinvest in the local economy at a 60% higher rate than chains and
internet retailers.
• Small businesses create more than half the non-farm private gross domestic product (GDP).
• Locally owned and operated businesses create higher-paying jobs for you and your neighbors.
• More of your tax dollars are reinvested in your community to fund local schools, hire more police
officers and improve roads.
